International religious service for Johann Gregor Mendel
The Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady will become a meeting place for people of diverse origins and nationalities sharing the same faith, values and love for their neighbours. As Jesus Christ said, “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love” (John 15:12). For the first time in history, we will hear the Missa Mendeliana composed for the 200th anniversary of the birth of one of history’s greatest scientists, Johann Gregor Mendel, whose very name is a reminder of shared Czech-German history. The piece uses Mendel’s principles of inheritance (dominant and recessive traits) to remind us of Mendel’s discoveries. The mass will be celebrated by Bishop Luis Marín de San Martin, the under-secretary of the Synod of Bishops. The service will be in Latin with readings in Czech and German.
