Law student Farid has lived all his life in France. When his father falls ill and sends him to Algeria to try and save their family house from demolition, Farid discovers a landscape he has never seen, a language he hardly knows, and a country which for him is incomprehensibly old and backward. Gradually, however, he discovers a plethora of exceptional characters whose humour and straightforwardness surprises and deeply affects him. Among them is his young cousin and namesake, who dreams of going to France. The two youngsters travel together to the city of Oran for an important legal document. After a sensational night full of wild music and alcohol, Farid wakes alone in his hotel room – his cousin has vanished with his passport.
